Good evening!
I received a request about hair care after my last post about the Essentials Hair Mask, and I thought I should do a post with tips all about hair care!
Having “good hair” is not always easy, and depending on your hair type and
the climate where you live, keeping your hair in good shape can
turn into a chore.
Caring for your hair doesn’t have to be a pain; there are tricks all over the place about how to properly care for it, and these are some of my favorite tips and tricks that I’ve picked up over time.
Caring for your hair doesn’t have to be a pain; there are tricks all over the place about how to properly care for it, and these are some of my favorite tips and tricks that I’ve picked up over time.
First is heat.
We all know it’s damaging to our hair, but how often should you avoid it?
Blow drying is incredibly harsh and drying to your strands, so be sure to only use it
when you need that “blow out” look. Special occasions only!
If blow drying is a must in your routine since many of us are so busy these days,
at least be sure to keep the heat setting to “warm” instead of “hot”. The hottest
setting is sure to bring out the frizz later in the day if you have fine or already
dry/damaged hair. By using the warm setting, your hair gets a little more
of a break and you can still get that look you love so much!
Another good tip is to keep the drier pointed down against your hair,
this minimizes frizz by drying your hair in the proper direction.

This also brings me to my next tip, never ever brush your hair
when it is wet! Ever! Unless you like breakage, that is. Hair is most fragile
when it is wet, so put down that brush and relax for a while, ladies.
If you use a detangler then be sure to comb it through with a toothed comb
suitable for your hair type. Don’t be too hard on it!
Next up,
Fact or myth – Frequent trims with longer hair help your hair grow faster and
keep split ends at bay.
Answer – 50/50.
Yes, trimming your hair often will keep split ends from forming, but it in no way
stimulates hair growth. Proper care can help to stop split ends from
forming before their time, and you can grow your hair longer by
avoiding the salon or self-trims every month or two.
Moisturizing is key when you want to stop split ends in their tracks!
Because moisture is such a big part in hair health, it’s important to find a conditioner
that is right for your hair type. Some of us have thick hair, others have thin (me!).
Some of us have curly, while others are straight.
With all the options we have on the market today, don’t settle for what product
has the most “hype”, unless it works for your hair!
Shop around to make sure you’re using something that really suits your needs.
Good fats, lots of vitamins and tons of water.
All of these things help increase the volume, shine and overall quality
of your hair. Omega 3’s and vitamin C add body and shine, while zinc
helps to fortify the hair cuticles and make your hair stronger
and more vibrant. Try to keep up a good diet with plenty of fluids
to keep your hair in tip-top shape.
Scalps are often neglected when it comes to caring for our hair. We focus more on
what is hanging down rather than where health and growth begins!
I try to use an oil once or twice a week on my scalp to keep moisture locked in
and to help the new hair growth stay healthy as long as possible.
One that I really enjoy is the Matrix Essentials Oil Serum.
It helps to seal in moisture and is actually lightweight enough that you can massage it
through your hair from the root to tip. It isn’t greasy and it doesn’t weight hair down.
However, it does tame flyaways and frizz while retaining moisture and giving
hair a great sheen. My hair loves this stuff, but I wouldn’t recommend using it
more than a few (3-4) times a week, or you may start to notice product buildup in your hair.
I see that I’m due for a trim, myself!
Pay attention to your hair products and the ingredients, hydrate and eat healthy!
